| According
to a recent study, it was found that the long pulse Nd:YAG laser
system is safe and effective for the removal of unwanted hair
in patients with Fitzpatrick skin types I to V for long-term, stable
results.
The
Nd:YAG laser system can give you safe and effective hair removal
in types I up to V; even type VI skin. There has been a trend in
long pulse hair removal laser systems toward the longer wavelengths
The melanin absorption for the Nd:YAG laser drops off as you get
to the longer wavelengths, but the longer wavelengths also allow
deeper penetration. This provides the ability to treat darker skin
types. Two years ago, there were no hair-removal lasers available
to treat darker skin. In the past, the absorption rate, or speed
of laser energy, as well as the temperature of the skin while receiving
treatment, caused hyper-and hypopigmentation [dark and light spots],
scarring and blistering in Black skin.
Today's
improved lasers deliver the same amount of energy, but at a slower
rate and safer wavelength while keeping the skin cool. These changes
have greatly reduced the negative side effects on Black skin.
Hair removal with the Nd:YAG laser system usually requires four
to seven treatment sessions. The results last for three to four
months. Treatments take five to seven minutes for smaller areas
such as lip and chin or 20 to 30 minutes for legs.
What
to expect:
*
Stinging or light pain during the procedure.
*
Temporary redness in the treated areas.
*
Temporary light or dark changes in skin tone that last up to seven
or eight weeks after a procedure.
